Background: SOME SEVENTY OF THE THOUSANDS OF REFUGEES WHO RECENTLY CROSSED OVER TO HONG KONG FROM THE CHINESE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC BOARDED A SHIP FOR TAIWAN ON JUNE 25.

EACH OF THE REFUGEES RECEIVED MONEY FOR THEIR FARE AND POCKET MONEY FROM THE RENUIE HILL REFUGEE RELIEF CAMP ASSOCIATION OF HONG KONG. THEY LEFT ABOARD THE BRITISH-OWNED STEAMER "SZECHUEN", AND LANDED AT KEELUNG, TAIWAN, TWO DAYS LATER.

REPORTS FROM TAIWAN SAY THOUSANDS CROWDED THE KEELUNG DOCKSIDE TO WELCOME THEM. MANY WERE RELATIVES OF THE ARRIVALS, PARTED SINCE THEY TOO LEFT THE MAINLAND WITH THE CHIANG KAI-SHEK REGIME. PREPARATIONS HAVE BEEN MADE TO RECEIVE 35,000 AT A HASTILY ESTABLISHED REFUGEE CENTRE IN SOUTHERN TAIWAN.
