    THE CONGO FEATURES A RELIQUARY IN WOOD - A TALL FIGURE INTO WHICH FETISHES HAVE BEEN NAILED, A NOTED FEATURE FROM THE WESTERN CONGO. A MONUMENTAL HEAD IN WOOD, VERY MUCH ERODED BY TIME AND THE ELEMENTS. IT COMES FROM BAULE IN THE IVORY COAST AND IS HEWN FROM ONE PIECE.

    A STRIKING SCULPTURE FROM NIGERIA IS A COCK IN BRONZE AND IS TYPICAL OF THE ART FOUND AT THE COURT OF BENIN WHERE THESE BROZE BIRDS DECORATED THE ALTARS PUT UP IN MEMORY OF THE QUEEN MOTHERS OF BENIN.

    FROM ASHANTI IN GHANA, A VASE IN TERRA COTTA, ONCE BELONGED TO A NOBLE FAMILY AND WAS AN OBJECT OF WORSHIP. AND FROM VUVI IN GABON IS A SCULPTURED DOOR, SHOWING IN ITS UPPER PART A STYLISHED FIGURE WITH ARMS CROSSED AND BEARING A DESIGN TOPPED BY FOUR SKULLS.

    FINALLY, FROM MENDE IN SIERRA LEONE, A HELMET MASK IN BLACK-PAINTED WOOD AS WORN BY THE BUNDU, AN EXCLUSIVE WOMEN'S SOCIETY.
