    In the United States, the chairman of the Boeing Company, Mr. William Allen, said on Thursday (13 May) that it may cost up to a billion U.S. dollars (40 million sterling) for his firm to restart work on America's supersonic transport (SST) programme -- given an new lease of life by the House of Representatives on Wednesday (12 May).

    Following the lead of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, the Senate Appropriations Committee on Thursday voted 13 to 7 against a move to delete the SST's financial allocation from the Supplemented Appropriations Bill.
