  • Description

A SIMPLE RESUSCITATOR HAS BEEN DEVELOPED IN SOUTH AFRICA FOR HELPING NEW-BORN BABIES TO DRAW THEIR FIRST BREATH.

THE DEVICE, INVENTED BY DR. H.H. SAMSON, A SPECIALIST ANAESTHETIST IN JOHANNESBURG, IS NOW IN USE A LARGE NUMBER OF HOSPITALS THROUGHOUT SOUTH AFRICA.

THE APPARATUS IS BOTH INEXPENSIVE AND SIMPLE TO OPERATE. PRESSURE ON A BULB SUCKS IN FRESH AIR THOUGH A VALVE WHILE TWO ESCAPE VENTS AUTOMATICALLY REGULATE THE CORRECT VOLUME OF AIR REQUIRED TO EXPAND A NEW-BORN BABY'S LUNGS.

DIFFICULTIES IN DRAWING THE FIRST BREATH ARE A COMMON CAUSE OF DEATH IN NEW BABIES AND ALSO OF INFIRMITIES IN EARLY CHILDHOOD. DR. SAMSON'S INVENTION IS HELPING TO OVERCOME THIS. IT DOES NOT NEED SKILLED OPERATORS AND HAS BEEN FOUND TO BE THOROUGHLY EFFECTIVE AND SAFE.
