Background: British Association Football club Tottenham Hotspur--of London, won a place in the European Cup semi-final Tuesday (March 21) by scoring a I - I draw in London against Arad of Rumania.

Arad scored first, in the 61st minute, through Flavio Domide, while the home team made hard work of the match, but a goal by Alan Gilzean eleven minutes from the end gave them a comfortable 3-1 overall win over the Rumanian club, who started the game two goals down after the first leg.

Tottenham, who were without star strikes Martin Chivers, who was under suspension, were given a slow handclasp during the second half.

Another British team, Wolverhampton Wanderers, was to play Juventus of Italy for the other semi-final place on Wednesday (March 22).

SYNOPSIS: The second leg of the European Cup quarter finals, between England's Tottenham Hotspurs and Rumania's Unizale Textile Arad, in London on Tuesday. An early Spurs attack on the well-defended Arad goal.

Arad--who had started the match with a two-goal deficit after the first leg game--showed enthusiasm and drive scoring the first goal in the sixty-first minute of the match. the point was made by 24-year-old Rumanian International Flavio Domide.

The one-goal lead by the visitors brought renewed attack from the English team--but the Rumanian goal was well-defended. Still the Arad team seemed unable to believe in their own ability to make up the necessary goals to go into the load. And, although Spurs were playing without their star striker Martin Chievers, they were able to renew their onslaught on the Rumanian goal--but once again the visiting goalkeeper made a spectacular save.

Then, in the final minutes, a free kick gave Spurs their chance--with Alan Gilzean heading in the goal which was to end the match in a one-one tie, but ensure the English team a place in the semi-finals.
