  • Description

For the sixth consecutive day Cyprus continues in the throes of political and civil upheaval. Yesterday (Wednesday) thousands of schoolchildren took to the streets demonstrating support of President Makarios and against Greek intervention in the Island's affairs. (Yesterday was also the second anniversary of president Makarios' escape from an assassination attempt by six Greek-Cypriote who shot down his helicopter after it had taken off from the Archbishopric).

The trouble started on March 2nd, when it was rumoured that the Greek Government has demanded that president Makarios hand over to the United Nations peace-keeping force arms allegedly imported from Czechoslovakia. The following day, at a meeting of the Holy Synod, three Bishops demanded the resignation of the President on the grounds that Orthodox Church law prohibits an Archbishop from holding temporal power. Since then, demonstrations and counter-demonstrations have swept the country.

SYNOPSIS: Students milling around a school in Nicosia at the start of a demonstration in support of President makarios on Wednesday. It was the sixth day of political and civil strafe on the Island. The crisis began on March second, with rumours that the Greek Government had demanded that President Makarios hand over to the United Nations peace force a consignment of arms allegedly imported from Czechoslovakia.

The XiCKX] converged an another school, where the pupils were said to be pro-ENDSIS, the Greek-Cypriot movement headed by General Grivas. But the students inside the school refused to be drawn into a confrontation with the makarios supporters.

The Greek Embassy was the next stop for the demonstrators.

President Makarios' position is still uncertain. Following the first political crisis, he was faced with a demand from three of his Bishops that he resign the President on the grounds that Orthodox Church law does not allow an Archbishop to hold temporal power. With demonstrations and counter-demonstrations sweeping the island--the President has not yet declared whether he will or will not resign.
