  • Description

CONSTRUCTION WORK ON THE WORLD'S LARGEST OIL TANKER, WHICH WILL BE 276,000 TONS DEADWEIGHT, IS PROGRESSING RAPIDLY AT A YOKOHAMA SHIPYARD. THE TANKER AND FIVE OTHERS OF SIMILAR SIZE ARE BEING BUILT FOR THE NATIONAL BULK CARRIERS COMPANY OF THE UNITED STATES. BUT THE SIZE OF THE TANKER HAS COMPLICATED USUAL CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES. IT IS TOO LARGE TO FIT OUT IN DRY DOCK SO IT WILL HAVE TO BE FLOATED OUT OF THE DOCK AND COMPLETED AT THE SHIPYARD'S OCEAN PIER.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE MAMMOTH TANKER STARTED IN OCTOBER LAST YEAR. IT WILL BE LAUNCHED IN EARLY MARCH AND COMPLETED IN SEPTEMBER THIS YEAR -- A TOTAL OF 11 MONTHS. THE CRAFT WILL BE 1,140 FEET (346 METRES) LONG AND 174 FEET (53.3 METRES) WIDE. IT WILL BE CAPABLE OF CARRYING 300,000 TONS OF OIL IN ONE VOYAGE, 30 PER CENT MORE THAN THE WORLD'S CURRENTLY LARGEST TANKER, THE 210,000 TON IDEMITSU MARU.
