  • Description

SOME 20 MILLION INDIANS IN TEN STATES ARE FACING DROUGHT OR FOOD SHORTAGE FOLLOWING FAILURE OF THE MONSOON RAINS THIS SUMMER. IN THE DESERT STATE OF RAJASTHAN, IN WESTERN INDIA, SOME TWO MILLION PEOPLE ARE THREATENED WITH FAMINE.

THE DROUGHT HAS LEFT THE FARMERS IN THE PARCHED AREAS WITH VERY LITTLE CROPS OR WATER, AND WITHOUT GRASS AND FODDER FOR THE CATTLE. CATTLE PROVIDE THE ECONOMIC MAINSTAY OF THE PROVINCE.

ANIMALS IN BETTER CONDITION ARE BEING DRIVEN EASTWARDS TO RICHER DISTRICTS AND THE TOWNS, WHERE THEY WAIT IN LONG QUEUES FOR FODDER AT SUBSIDISED PRICES.

DRINKING WATERS IS THE MAIN PROBLEM FOR THE DESERT-HARDENED RAJASTHANI FARMERS AND THEIR FAMILIES. IN VILLAGES WELLS ARE DRYING UP AND CAMELS HAVE BEGUN TO DIE.

STATE AND CENTRAL GOVERNMENT RESERVES HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PROVIDE SOME WHEAT, RICE AND COARSE GRAINS LIKE MAIZE JOWAR AND BAJRA. SCHEMES TO SINK NEW WELLS AND PROVIDE DRINKING WATER ARE ALSO BEING PUSHED THROUGH, AND FOODGRAIN SALES ARE BEING ADMINISTERED IN FAIR-PRICE AND RATION SHOPS TO PREVENT PRICES INFLATING ON THE OPEN MARKET.
