  • Description

At least thirty three people died tonight (Sunday) when a fast diesel train travelling from Hastings, on the English South Coast, to London crashed at Hither Green, a London suburb.

The train, of twelve coaches, jumped the rails, and a number of the carriages overturned. Hundreds of police, ambulancemen, firemen and other rescue organisations were mobilised to handle the disaster.

Teams of doctors and nurses crawled through the train, performing emergency operations on stranded victims, including amputations. Priests also stood by to administer the Last Rites to the severely injured. More than fifty people have been admitted to hospital, many suffering from severe shock.

It was Britain's worst rail crash for ten years, and occurred within a few miles of Lewisham, where in 1957 90 people were killed and 175 injured in a rail crash.

Four and a half hours after the crash firemen and police were still cutting away sections of mangled carriages to free injured people, and remove the dead still pinned in the wreckage. A number of the dead died soon after they had been freed; others died while rescue attempts were still in progress.
