  • Description

Navy ships and frogmen were continuing efforts on Monday (23 October) to recover an Olympic Airways aircraft which plunged into the sea off a fashionable beach near Athens on Saturday (21 October), killing 34 people.

The twin-turbo-jet airliner, a Japanese-made YS-11, was on a routine flight from the Ionian island of Corfu when it lost altitude off Voula Beach, only one minute's flying time from Athens Airport. Twenty-nine bodies are yet to be recovered.

Nineteen people, including the pilot and four foreign passengers, survived. Most of them were taken to hospitals in Athens for treatment.

Rescue teams have so far recovered five bodies. Officials believe the 29 missing are still trapped inside the plane.
