  • Description

MR SOJI WILLIAMS, NIGERIAN HIGH COMMISSIONER TO TANZANIA, RETURNED TO LAGOS ON TUESDAY (APRIL 16) BY AIR, HAVING BEEN RECALLED FROM DAR-ES-SALAAM FOLLOWING TANZANIAN RECOGNITION OF SECESSIONIST BIAFRA. IN A SURPRISE DEVELOPMENT, ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN UNITY (OAU) SECRETARY-GENERAL DIALLO TELLI ARRIVED IN LAGOS WITH MR WILLIAMS.

A NIGERIAN FEDERAL GOVERNMENT STATEMENT, ISSUED LAST SATURDAY (APRIL 13), SAID THE TANZANIAN DECISION TO RECOGNISE BIAFRA WAS CONTRARY TO THE CHARTER OF THE OAU AND ITS PRINCIPLE OF RESPECT FOR THE TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY OF MEMBER COUNTRIES.

FOUR NIGERIAN HIGH COMMISSION OFFICIALS REMAINED IN DAR-ES-SALAAM, BUT NIGERIAN SOURCES IN NAIROBI SAID IT WAS EXPECTED THAT A SENIOR DIPLOMAT WOULD BE SENT TO WIND UP THE MISSION.

MR WILLIAMS, ORDERED BY NIGERIAN LEADER MAJOR-GENERAL YAKUBU GOWON TO LEAVE TANZANIA THE SAME DAY AS THE DAR-ES-SALAAM DECISION, DECLINED TO COMMENT.
