  • Description

Several thousand South Lebanese villagers from the border with Israel staged a demonstration march through Beirut yesterday (June 30) calling for increased fortifications and better protection against Israeli raids.

The march who called for by Mr. Kamel Al-Asaad, a former Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament and now an Opposition Member in the Chamber of Deputies. He heads a committee known as the "Awakening Committee of the South."
Permission for the demonstration to be staged was given by the Lebanese Minister off the Interior, Kamel Jumblat, after demonstration leaders had given an undertaking that they would be responsible for any damage or disturbance that might occur during the march.

The demonstrators, carrying Lebanese and Palestinians flags, marched to Government House past lines of Lebanese troops, and were addressed there by Mr. Asaad.

An official report published on the morning o[f the demonstration march stated that 23,000 of South Lebanon's 400,000 population had been uprooted from their homes. The report attributed the exodus to "repeated Israeli attack on peaceful villages, and to the patrols being sent continuously by the Israeli enemy into Lebanese border areas to terrorise the people and prevent them from exploiting their land."
The demonstration march was completed without any violent incidents.
