    Background: ITALY, FANO

For the first time in a hundred years, the fishing town of Fano was visited by a Pope. In his address, Pope John Paul 11 remarked on his affinity to fishermen because the apostles fished in the sea of Galilee, and it was the duty of the Pontiff to be a fisherman of men. After a fish meal, the Pope threw wreaths on to the sea in memory of those who have drowned. Thousands had gathered to hear him preach from a floating altar. Many stood waist-deep in the water, while others listened from flag-bedecked boats. In paying tribute to the world's fisherman and sea workers, the Pontiff said their sacrifices had made the oceans a means of communications instead of division among peoples.
