Background: In foggy weather, over 44,000 Londoners watched at White Hart Lane, Nov 16, as Tottenham Hotspur completed a double by beating the Russian touring soccer team "Moscow Torpedo" 3-2. They also won a Moscow match against the 'Torpedoes' last summer 1-0.
Within 25 minutes Tottenham sent the score soaring to 3-1, in spite of valiant efforts by Russia's crack goalie Lev Yashin, whom Torpedo had borrowed, along with left-back Boris Kusnetsov, from Moscow Dynamo for their three-match visit to Britain. He had a hard game with the attacking Spurs. The "Yellow Octopus" - as Yashin is called back home - was 'bumped' twice by over-eager centre-forward Bobby Smith. Apart form these incidents the game was hard but fair.
Left-half Mackay, Scottish International, gave Spurs the lead after five minutes. Englishman Bobby Smith scored the second goal after 20 minutes. Within seconds, Russian captain Ivanov reduced the lead, but Spurs came back with a brilliant combination between Medwin, Dunmore and White who made it 3-1.
'Torpedo' came back into the game in the second half when Spurs switched the out-of-form Marchi to right-half in place of Blanchflower, and Henry went to left-back. Blanchflower was to captain Ireland against England the following day, and took advantage of the rule allowing substitutes to miss the second half.
Spurs did not profit from the changes and Marchi had a poor game. The Russians set up a series of attacks, giving Eyev a chance to raise to 3-2 with a well-taken goal ten minutes from time. Smith put the ball in the net again - only to find the referee had blown for an earlier infringement.
