  • Description

Both the United States and Australian tennis teams have been practising hard for their Davis Cup Final which opens in Cleveland, Ohio, on Friday. The United States are defending their champions' title against the Australians who have not been in a Davis Cup Final since 1968.

The finals consist of four singles matches, and one doubles. The Australians are represented by Ken Rosewall, 39 years old, Rod Laver, 35, and John Newcombe, 29. The mature years of these veterans has drawn some mocking comments from the American press, but the Australian manager, Neale Fraser, has replied, 'The best players win - not the oldest or the youngest'. In Stan Smith, the Americans have the world's number one player.

The contest has aroused more interest than any Davis Cup Final for some years.

The Australian team captain, John Newcombe, summed up his team's chances.

Stan Smith described the qualities of the United States team.
