  • Description

A glittering host of international music-lovers - among them the Begum Aga Khan, Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco, and American critic Elsa Maxwell - gathered at La Scala in Milan, Dec 7, for the opening of the operatic season.

It was the day of St Ambrose, patron saint of the city, and the great attraction - Maria Callas, the "tigress", with tenor Franco Corelli, ex-footballer, in Donizetti's "Poliuto", little known even in Italy and specially chosen for the occasion by La Callas herself.

The audience - described as "perhaps the best-dressed and worst-behaved of any" - gave Mme Callas a mixed reception. All were united in praise of tenor Corelli, whose heroic singing in the title part stole the glory from the First Lady of Opera.
