Background: REPORTER: These scientists and engineers are giving commands to the Pioneer 11 space craft, 500 million miles away it is now ??? to Saturn on the 2nd plan of its mission........Pioneer Project manager, Charles Hall, at N.A.S.A. main research centre.
HALL: On this board here is a projection on the projectery that Pioneer 11 followed as it approached Jupiter........and out this way.
REPORTER: Why are scientists so interested in studying Jupiter?
HALL: For one thing we know Jupiter has a very similar magnetic field to the earth......so by studying those features or Jupiter we hope to learn more about similar features on earth.
REPORTER: Next stop return......late Saturn 1979.
HALL: Well, on this picture behind me snows Saturn and rings at you can see from earth from Pioneer 11 arrives there............eventually escape from a solar by system.
REPORTER: As the ??? space craft gives between Saturn's rings, it will come within 4,000 miles or its surface......
....Pioneer 11 is speeding on to its rendezvous with Saturn.
IOLST: We have 3,000 miles to go out display looks, good.
REPORTER: The ??? ??? ??? ??? landing ??? ??? ???. the Shuttle is astronaut Joe Engle, here a at Space Division, Hockwell International in California. He describes full-scale mock-up of the craft.
ENGLE:What you think as he aircraft part of the modal you see behind me is 120' long.....normal carrying plane.
.....A typical mission starts with a vertical launch.....landing in an airport like a conventional plane...
ENGLE: The Shuttle launch has a great deal more flexibility than conventional launching system......circling in order.
