  • Description

INTRODUCTION: Cuban President Fidel Castro arrived in Moscow on Monday (4 April) for talks with Soviet leaders following his recently-completed tour of Africa. He flew to the Soviet capital from east Berlin, where he had discussions with East German Head of State, Erik Honecker.

SYNOPSIS: Dr. Castro was greeted at the airport by Communist Party Secretary, Leonid Brezhnev, President Nicolai Podgorny, Premier Alexei Kosygin, Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko and other Soviet leaders.

Just before Dr Castro reached Moscow, President Podgorny arrived back from a tour of east and south-east Africa, visiting some of the so-called 'front line' states ranged against white Rhodesia, Western observers say it's certain Soviet leaders would want to compare notes with Castro, particularly on the talks he had in Ethiopia and Somalia. It's thought the strained relations between those two countries would also be discussed. Both leaders met heads of African nationalist guerrilla movements operating in Rhodesia and South West Africa, and both pledged their support to overthrow "racist regimes".

Dr. Castro currently faces a diplomatic crisis with Zaire, which has suspended diplomatic ties with Cuba - alleging that Cuban officers led an invasion force from Angola into Zaire's copper-rich Shaba province, formerly Katanga. In a speech after the cuban president's arrival, Mr Brezhnev rejected Zaire's allegations.
