  • Description

The first starters in the 1973 Monte Carlo rally left various cities during the day. (Friday 19 January). This year the cars will head for the finish line from 9 European cities...Almeria, Athens, Frankfurt, Glasgow, Monte Carlo, Oslo, Rheims, Rome and Warsaw.

Although the early stages of the run looked straightforward as far as the weather was concerned, a lot of snow and ice awaits them in the mountains near Monte Carlo itself.

Last year the historic event was won by an Italian Lancia after the French Renault Alpines suffered a dramatic series of breakdowns near the finish.

This year the Renaults are back in force with a massive 11 car entry. About 300 crews were due to start.

SYNOPSIS: The 1973 Monte Carlo rally has begun with competitors leaving from nine European cities. This was the scene at Oslo as the cars moved off for the annual hectic drive over more than one and a half thousand miles.

The 300 teams set out from Almeria, Athens, Frankfurt, Glasgow, Oslo, Rheims, Rome, Warsaw, and Monte Carlo itself.

The early stages looked straightforward as far as the weather was concerned with only rain forecast to slow thing down. But the organisers prayers for snow were answered almost at the last minute when heavy falls began to coat the lower Alps and the mountains behind Monaco. It's in that area that the critical second and third stages of the rally will be run. Snow has settled on the tricky 10 mile speed test over the Corobin Pass near Digne which all the competitors have to tackle before arriving at Monte Carlo.

Last year the historic event was won by an Italian Lancia after the leading French Renault Alpinea suffered a dramatic series of breakdowns with the end in sight.

This year the Renaults are back in force with a massive 11 car team made up of five works cars and six others with works backing. On pure numbers alone they must be considered favourites. There's no official Porsche team, although there are plenty of individual Porsche entries...but the main competition is expected from Italian Lancias and Fiats, British Ford Escorts and Japanese Datsuns. There's an unusual entrant this year too....a little Volkswagen setting off with the giants.
