  • Description

The Shah of Iran and Empress Farah are expected to fly to Morocco on Sunday or Monday (21 or 22 January) to visit King Hassan. The Shah and wife have been in Egypt since Tuesday (16 January), when they left their troubled homeland for an enforced holiday.

SYNOPSIS: The Shah waved and smiled to cheering Egyptian crowds when a motorcade took him from Aswan airport to his hotel on Tuesday (16 January), but reporters said he looked pale and tired. The royal couple has been relaxing on closely-guarded Elephant Island on the river Nile as guests of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. During his visit, the Shah has held talks with President Sadat and former United States President, Gerald Ford -- who is also in Aswan at President Sadat's invitation. During the Shah's visit, the Egyptian press has stressed that Egypt is not taking sides in Iran's troubles.

At the urging of President Sadat, the Shah and his wife did some sightseeing among the ruins on Elephant Island. Photographers were able to take these pictures from the opposite bank of the River Nile. After their visit to Morocco, the couple will travel to the United States for an extended visit.
