  • Description

Preceded by a colourful folk lore parade, drivers from Italy, Austria and France competed in the first car race on ice in Western Europe, held at Cortina D'Ampezzo, Italian Dolomite winter sports centre Jan. 18.

Visnews filmed these daredevil sportsmen as they piloted their tyre studded vehicles around the tortuous bends of the one kilometre track,-intentionally covered in thick ice, at speeds of more than 60 m.p.h. Skids and drifts through the treacherous bends were inevitable. Several spectacular skids occurred but fortunately there were no serious accidents.

Winner of the fifteen lap final was Corrado Manfredini (No 10) of Italy. Otto Mathe of Austria (No 82), probably the only racing driver with only one arm, came second. An amazing feat for one so handicapped. Frenchman Laureau (No 1) gained third place.
