Background: Pope John-Paul the First, who died only a month after taking office, was buried on Wednesday (4 October). The funeral of the 65-year-old Pontiff took place in the Vatican.

SYNOPSIS: The plain Cyprus coffin carrying the body of the 263rd successor to Saint Peter was carried out of the Basilica as drizzle began to fall. Among the thousands filling Saint Peter's Square there was disbelief that just a month after his ceremonial installation on the very same spot, his coffin should be placed there at rest.

Mass was celebrated by the Dean of the College of Cardinals who in his homily spoke of the Pope who had passed so quickly, but had conquered people's hearts and who had been loved intensely.

Pope John-Paul, it was said, had passed like a meteor leaving the world amazed and astonished. The Pope had won the admiration of Rome in his short reign although he himself did not like to think of himself as a monarch who reigned over the world's 700 million Roman Catholics. Despite the weather the huge square was filled with Roman Catholic from many parts of the world who had been charmed by the informal style of a man who -- despite his short time in office -- had already become know as the Friendly Pope.

Heavy rain, which came mid-day through the Mass was in keeping with the atmosphere of mourning in Rome since the sudden death of the Pope. Priests from churches all over Rome went among the crowd to give Communion. The simple funeral Mass -- the same in essence as that for any Roman Catholic -- preceded the burial which was to follow minutes later in the Basilica's grotto. The funeral marked the beginning of nine days of official mourning and on the tenth day Papal elections begin again.
