    THE SIX-NATION AFRICAN GROUNDNUT COUNCIL IS MEETING IN DAKAR, SENEGAL, UNTIL SATURDAY IN ITS SEVENTH SESSION -- THE FIRST AT A MINISTERIAL LEVEL. THE COUNCIL MEETING, WHICH OPENED ON MONDAY, IS EXPECTED TO CONSIDER THE FORMATION OF A JOINT MARKETING ORGANISATION.

    THE AFRICAN GROUNDNUT COUNCIL REPRESENTS SENEGAL, MALI, SUDAN, GAMBIA, NIGERIA AND NIGER. CONGO-KINSHASA, WHICH HAS OBSERVER STATUS, IS APPLYING FOR MEMBERSHIP. AT THE OPENING SESSION, MR. ALHAJI IBRAHIM DASUKI, THE CHAIRMAN, SAID: "AT ALL COSTS, MEMBER COUNTRIES MUST TAKE DECISIONS WHICH WILL ASSURE A PROFITABLE RETURN FOR AFRICAN PRODUCERS."
    THE COUNCIL WAS SET UP IN OUGADOUGOU, UPPER VOLTA, IN NOVEMBER 1965 FOR MARKETING THE GROUNDNUTS OF ITS MEMBER STATES. THE COUNCIL NOW HAS ITS HEAD OFFICE AT LAGOS, NIGERIA, WHERE IT IS HEADED BY M. JACQUES DIOUF, THE SECRETARY-GENERAL. BEFORE THE MEETING, HE TOLD NEWSMEN THAT THE MOST Important QUESTION WOULD BE A WORLD AGREEMENT ON VEGETABLE-OIL BEARING PRODUCTS.

    THE MINISTERS AT THE COUNCIL MEETING ARE ALSO EXPECTED TO DISCUSS MEASURES TO ENSURE A PROFITABLE PRICE FOR SUCH PRODUCTS.
