  • Description

Marshal Chu Teh, seen here in recent Visnews film together with President Mao Tse-Tung, is prominently mentioned as Red China's new president since Mao's decision not to seek re-election as Chairman of the Government.

The official Peiping News Agency said that Mao is stepping down as president to devote full time to running the Communist Party, retaining the much more important job of Communist Party Leader.

Marshall Chu has been at Mao's side since 1928, the early days of Chinese Communism. He is 72 years old and claims to be born to a peasant family. The Communist International Magazine says Chu once was a coolie. Marshall Chu studied at the Military Academy at Yurman and became general at the early age of 30. During the twenties he studied in Goettingen, Germany, and was arrested for his alleged connections with the Bulgarian anarchist Dimitroff.

Chu organised the Chines Communist guerrillas into a fighting force to drive Chiang Kai-shek - with whom he broke in 1927 - from the mainland. He has been married four times.
