  • Description

Argentina's President Maria Estela Peron handed over control of a government-owned publishing company to the powerful General Labour Confederation during a visit there to meet leading unionists on Friday (4 April).

The company -- Mayo which publishes the newspaper Democracia -- was run by the former Peronist administration.

The handover was interpreted as a step to mend her relations with the country's organised labour force.

It has been reported that her relations with labour unions have been strained because of her refusal to meet them and partly because of the union's demand for greater participation in government affairs.

In an emotional speech, President Peron promised to consult more often with working-class leaders and pleaded for their support. She also strongly denounced those responsible for the current wave of violence in Argentina.
