  • Description

There was a big demonstration in the Spanish capital, Madrid, on Tuesday night (14 September) in protest at rising food prices in Spain.

SYNOPSIS: About 20 thousand people brandishing placards and loaves of bread, marched through the streets of Madrid during the demonstration. They were calling for "bread, justice and freedom". The demonstration was organised by neighbourhood action groups based in Madrid's working class suburbs. It had been authorised by the Government. Old women in the crowd held aloft empty shopping bags and chanted "Juan Carlos, Queen Sofia, the cooking pot is empty".

Alongside the women marched youths who waved republican flags and called for the resignation of Prime Minister Adolfo Suarez Gonzalez. Isolated groups later clashed with riot police and at least one police jeep was damaged. However there were no immediate reports of any arrests.

The peacefulness of the Madrid demonstration was in contrast to recent others in northern Spain where at least one demonstrator was killed by police. In Bilbao on Monday police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse a crowd protesting against the killing.
