    THREE ISRAELI NAVAL COMMANDOS DIED IN AN EXPLOSION ABOARD THEIR BOAT AFTER A RAID ON A UAR NAVAL BASE THIS WEEK. AN ISRAELI SPOKESMAN SAID THAT THE EXPLOSION WAS CAUSED BY A TECHNICAL MISHAP. THE ISRAELI MINISTER OF DEFENCE, GENERAL DAYAN, ATTENDED THE FUNERAL OF ONE OF THE COMMANDOS, A 27-YEAR-OLD OFFICER.

    AN ISRAELI ARMY SPOKESMAN SAID THE COMMANDOS CROSSED THE GULF OF SUEZ ON SUNDAY NIGHT AND SANK TWO UAR MOTOR TORPEDO BOATS AT RAS SADAT ABOUT 14 MILES (20 KMS) SOUTH OF SUEZ.

    THE ISRAELI ANNOUNCEMENT SAID THE COMMANDOS SANK THE SOVIET-BUILT P-183 TORPEDO BOATS AT THEIR MOORINGS IN RETALIATION FOR WHAT WAS DESCRIBED AS ACTS OF SABOTAGE AND MINING OF THE ISRAELI COASTLINE.

    LATER A TECHNICAL MISHAP ABOARD THE ISRAELI BOAT SET OFF EXPLOSIVES KILLING THREE OF THE CREW.

    ONE OF THE MEN KILLED, A 27-YEAR-OLD LIEUTENANT, WAS BURIED AT HIS KIBUTZ THE FOLLOWING DAY WITH MILITARY HONOURS. GENERAL MOSHE DAYAN, THE MINISTER OF DEFENCE, ATTENDED THE FUNERAL. MEMBERS OF THE DEAD MAN'S UNIT ALSO PAID THEIR RESPECTS. THE OTHER TWO COMMANDOS KILLED WERE A MAJOR AND A SERGEANT.

    ISRAELI MILITARY SOURCES SAID THAT THE ARAB BOATS SUNK IN THE RAID WERE 82 FEET (25 METRES) LONG, CARRIED A CREW OF 20, AND WERE EQUIPPED WITH TWO TORPEDOS AND TWO DOUBLE-BARRELLED 25 MM. GUNS.
