Background: Over two thousand athletes from Mediterranean nations have gathered in lzmir, in Turkey, to compete in the Mediterranean Games to be held this month. And interest in individual performances will be closely linked to prospects for the 1972 Olympics in Munich.
This is the first time that the Mediterranean Games will be held in Turkey. Countries bordering on the Mediterranean meet for the event every four years. The last games, in 1967, were held in Tunisia.
The competitors, from Nigeria, France, Italy, Lebanon, Libya, Malta, Morocco, Spain, Syria, Tunisia, Egypt, Yugoslavia and Turkey herself will take part in a full Olympic programme.
SYNOPSIS: For the first time in their history, the Mediterranean Games are being held this month in Turkey. In Izmir, the massive new Halkapinar Stadium has just been completed in readiness for the two thousand athletes who will be competing there. Individual performances will be linked closely to prospects for the 1972 Olympics.
Algeria is one of thirteen Mediterranean nations who have sent a team to Izmir. The city itself, in its picturesque setting in the Aegean, has been transformed with a Games Village built on the style of the Olympics. For the use of the athletes and visitors, there is a new information centre, post office and duty free shop.
Competitors will take part in a full Olympic programma of athletics, boxing, gymnastics, judo, wrestling and swimming. Other events will include basketball, cycling, fencing, football, tennis, shooting, volley-ball and water polo. The last Games were held in Tunisia in 1967.
