Secretary-General U Thant and United Nations Middle-East peace mediator Dr. Gunnar Jarring continued their discussions at the United Nations Headquarters in New York on Thursday (13 August).
On Friday, Egypt, Jordan and Israel were reported ready to begin peace talks in New York but a dispute over the level of representation was said to have held up a formal go-ahead signal from Dr. Gunnar Jarring. However, a compromise was believed imminent and Dr. Jarring was expected to announce before the weekend the beginning of the talks which he will handle.
When interviewed by reporters both U Thant and Dr. Jarring declined to comment on the progress of their discussions so far.
