    FRANCE'S FIRST ATOMIC SUBMARINE -- "LE REDOUTABLE" -- TODAY (THURSDAY) MADE ITS FIRST TRIP IN CHERBOURG HARBOUR AND IS READY FOR SEA TRIALS PROPELLED BY ITS ENRICHED URANIUM REACTOR. A CEREMONY MARKED THE CUTTING OF THE LAST CABLE SECURING THE SUBMARINE TO THE DOCK.

    THE 9,000-TON SUBMARINE -- ENTIRELY FRENCH-BUILT -- IS SCHEDULED TO GO INTO SERVICE TOWARDS THE END OF 1971 EQUIPPED WITH 16 POLARIS-TYPE MISSILES.

    "LE REDOUTABLE", WHICH WAS LAUNCHED IN MARCH 1967 IN THE PRESENCE OF PRESIDENT DE GAULLE; WILL START ITS FIRST SUBMERGED TRIALS IN CHERBOURG HARBOUR IN MID-MAY. ITS SPEED WILL BE IN THE REGION OF 20-25 KNOTS AND IT WILL HAVE THE CAPACITY TO STAY SUBMERGED FOR 80 DAYS AND TO DIVE TO A DEPTH OF BETWEEN 300 AND 500 METRES.

    THE SUBMARINE WAS THE FIRST OF THE FRENCH NUCLEAR FLEET TO BE LAUNCHED. SISTER SHIPS THE "TERRIBLE AND THE FOUDROYANT" WILL FOLLOW, SCHEDULED TO BECOME OPERATIONAL IN 1973 AND 1974 RESPECTIVELY.
