  • Description

The United Nations General Assembly is expected to decide soon whether the Khmer Republic delegation of Marshal Lon Nol should remain in the U.N. or be replaced by one appointed by deposed Cambodian leader Prince Norodom Sihanouk, now living in China.

Diplomats believe the outcome of a vote on the issue will be close, with less than half-a-dozen votes either way deciding it.

The United States has been pursuing, on behalf of Marshal Lon Nol, its most intensive diplomaticcampaign at the U.N. since its unsuccessful attempt to retain representation for Taiwan in 1971.

The move to oust the Lon Nol delegation is being led by China and Algeria.

If the vote goes against the United States and other backers of the present Khmer Republic delegation, including Britain and Japan, some members fear a profound reaction towards the world body.

The United States has come under considerable fire from Communist and Third World countries, especially China, who accused the U.S. of supporting the "traitorous Lon Nol puppet clique" in usurping and occupying the seat of government of Prince Sihanouk.

SYNOPSIS: At the United Nations, the General Assembly is expected to decide soon on whether the Khmer Republic delegation of Marshal Lon Nol should remain in the U.N., or be replaced by one appointed by deposed Cambodian leader Prince Norodon Sihank, who is now living in China.

China and Algeria are leading the move to oust the Lon Nol delegation. And chinese Ambassador, Huang Hua, on Tuesday made a sharp attack on the United States for its support of Lon Nol. He accused the United States of supporting what he called the traitorous Lon Nol puppet clique in usurping and occupying the seat of the Government of deposed leader Prince Norodom Sihanouk. Mr. Huang Hua told the Assembly that the United States, in a deliberate attempt to extend its war of aggression in Vietnam to the whole of Indochina, had instigated the Lon Nol group to stage a reactionary military coup.

The delegation of Marshal Lon Nol has been given intense diplomatic support by the United States.

Khmer Republic representative, Mr. keuky Lim, refuted claims by China that Prince Sihanouk's group controlled ninety per cent of the territory controlled ninety per cent of the territory in Khmer and eighty per cent of the population. He said that, if this was the case, Way did Prince Sihanouk remain in ex??? and not return to the acclaim of his people. He added that. despite the best efforts of foreign-inspired and assisted insurgents, General Lon Nol's Government had never ceased to control the vast majority of people and most of the territory. These views were supported later in the debate by United States.
