  • Description

Thousands of refugees from the new Congo Republic, have arrived in Northern Rhodesia. In Lusaka the Northern Rhodesian Government and the Federal Government have established a refugee centre, where they can find rest and food. Round the clock teams are at work providing food and clothing and in some cases money.

At the refugee centre, free petrol is provided allowing the families to continue their journey, south. Some of the people wish to return to the Congo now that Belgian and United Nations troops look like bringing the situation under control.

On arrival most people hurry to the large notice board, which has the names of all known refugees in the city, looking for relatives and friends, In an effort to contact friends most people take advantage of the free telegram service that has been opened for all refugees.

From Lusaka the Belgians can continue their journey south by train, or use the fleet of coaches that run up and down the Great North Road to Salisbury.

In Brussels Belgian Premier stated that there were about 5,000 refugees in Brazzaville, French Congo; 3,000 in Rhodesia; 3,500 in Angola: 2,000 in Ruanda Urundi; and an uncertain number in Uganda. There were about 80,000 Belgians in the Congo before independence.
