    FRENCH SKIERS FLORENCE STEURER AND MARIELLE GOITSCHEL TOOK FIRST AND SECOND PLACES IN THE SLALOM EVEN WHEN THE INTERNATIONAL SILBERKRUG WOMEN'S SKI MEETING ENDED IN BAD GASTEIN YESTERDAY (THURSDAY). BRITISH CHAMPION GINA HATHORN WAS HINDERED BY A SLALOM POLE IN ONE RUN, AND COULD NOT MAKE UP THE DIFFERENCE LATER.

    THE SLALOM COMPETITORS WERE SKIING ON A NEW LIGHT FALL OF SNOW, BUT THE ??? REMAINED A HARD SHEET OF ICE.

    MARIELLE GOITSCHEL WAS POORLY PLACED AT HALF-WAY, IN EIGHTH POSITION. BUT ON THE SECOND RUN SHE PUT IN A STORMING FINISH TO AGGREGATE 92.44 SECS, ONE HUNDREDTH OF A SECOND BETTER THAN GERTRUDE GABL OF AUSTRIA.

    MISS STEURER WON THE EVENT BY LITTLE MORE THAN A SECOND, WITH AN AGGREGATE 91.25.

    MISS HATHORN MADE A DETERMINED EFFORT IN HER SECOND RUN, AND PUT IN A TOTAL OF 95.10 SECONDS. DURING HER FIRST RUN SHE ARRIVED AT ONE GATE TOO LOW AND CAUGHT A SLALOM POLE WITH HER SHOULDER. SHE WENT THROUGH THE NEXT THREE OR FOR GATES WITH IT CAUGHT ACROSS HER BEFORE SHE COULD DISENTANGLE HERSELF.
