  • Description

Moslems in Porto Novo celebrated the Feast of Tabaski last Monday (February 16). The Feast of Tabaski, or Id al-Kabir, is one of the two main feast-days in the Islamic calender, and it is observed throughout the Moslem world.

The Feast of Tabaski is traditionally observed on the tenth day of the last month of the Moslem year. The festival takes place on the day after the annual pilgrimage to Mecca, and it lasts for three days. The festival symbolises the sacrificial offer by Abraham of his son, Isaac.

During the festival, Moslems wear new clothes, visit friends and exchange gifts. The communal prayers offered during the feast of Tabaski are more archaic and solemn than usual.

The ceremony ends with the sacrifice of a sheep.

Among the 15,000 faithful celebrating the festival were Lt. Colonel Benoit Sinzogan, representing the Government, the Prefect of the Oueme Department and other dignitaries. The Imam, El Hadj Moctar Raimi lead the prayers and the reading from the Koran.
