  • Description

Air France has denied official Israeli reports that the French pilot of the Libyan airliner shot down by Israeli fighters was not qualified to fly his Boeing 727. A statement issued in Paris on Monday (26 February) was followed up by a news conference in Tel Aviv, Israel, on Tuesday (27 February) when an Air France spokesman produced the flying qualifications of Air France pilot Jacques Bourges - who died along with more than one hundred others when he attempted to crash-land the Boeing after being shot at by Israeli Air Force Phantom jet-fighters.

Air France said the apparent reason for the Israeli report was that only the first of Captain Bourges' two qualification books - for piston-engined aircraft - was found in the crash wreckage.

Air France, the national French airline, have been helping Libya run its airline. Captain Bourges was among crews on loan.
