  • Description

Cambodian and South Vietnamese forces today (Sunday) pushed towards the communist held Pich Nil pass in a determined drive to reopen the only route to Cambodia's deepwater port on Kompong Som. The sweep is being centred around the vital Highway Four which links the capital Phnom Penh with the port.

Communist forces have held the highway and the Pich Nil pass for about two months, cutting off the bulk of supplies to the capital and forcing goods and food prices to almost double.

A harassing mortar attack and sporadic small arms fire failed to arrest the Cambodian advance. About 13,500 Cambodian and South Vietnamese troops, supported by tanks and jet aircraft are taking part in the operation.

Pich Nil pass in about 35 miles (56 kilometres) from Kompong Som, formerly known as Sihanoukville. Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces are reported to be holding well entrenched positions along the pass.
