Background: England gained a crushing 7-0 win over Austria Wednesday night (26 September) in London, as a prelude to their vital world Cup clash against Poland next month. The English team combined good precision kicking with excellent assists to swamp the Austrian goal. Austrian goalkeeper Fritz Koncilia played bravely, but most of the goals were virtually unstoppable from shots rammed home at close range.

But despite the winning margin, England never needed to be more than efficient in their play. They will have much tougher opposition against Poland when the two clubs meet on October 17. England must win that match to reach to world Cup finals, following Poland's three-nil victory over Wales in their Group Five match earlier in the day.

SYNOPSIS: England on the attack again Austria in their Wednesday night match at Wembley.

Channon scores, and England makes the first of its even goals against the out-classed Austrians.

It seemed more an exercise for the English players to test their skills before facing theirs World Cup qualifier. Clarke easily passes the Austrian defender to get this goal.

Again Clarke shows his power and determination in this assault on Austrian goalkeeper Fritz Koncilia. There was little the Austrian goalie could do to defend this king of play..The half ended with the score England three, and Austria Nil. Austria kicked-off in the second half, and began to show some of the ball control they had so badly lacked during the first half. But it was not long before England again went on the attack. Clarke again shoots at the Austrian goal. Shannon removed any doubt about an England goal.

Every move the English players made was right, Currie dribbled past the Austrian defence to set up the feed to Chivers in front of the goal for this solid score.

Currie blasted this shot that left the Austrians stunned, to make the score six - nil.

The final English goal came after this ???ine attack by Bell .. England most now face the tough Polish team in mid-October. That match will decide who goes on to play in the finals of the World Cup competition next year.
