MAYOR KHALLAF:"Mayors, councillors who held this meeting of Ramallah (indistinct), we decide to resign and to raise our resignations on Tuesday, to the military authorities unless the release of our brother and our colleague Bassam Shaqa the mayor of Nablus to go back to his work as Mayor of Nablus. Thank you very much."

REPORTER:"What if the military government does not accept your resignations?

KHALLAF:"Already we've got our decisions about that, if they'll accept it or not any measures that will be taken against our colleague Bassam Shaqa, we will never come back to our (indistinct) houses and to our offices. And also we are going to send a cable to the Defence minister Ezer Weizman telling him, asking him to release our brother Bassam Shaqa and to let him go back to Nablus as mayor and to serve his people in Nablus and his occupied territories. Thank you very much everybody."

REPORTER:"Does that mean your municipalities will remain under the government, under the military government ?"

KHALLAF:"I am not going to answer any questions just the decisions which we took tonight. That's all we've got for you. Thank you."

Background: Arab Mayors on the occupied West Bank of the Jordan are standing by their threat to resign if the Israeli military authorities deport one of their colleagues. The Mayor of Nablus, Bassam El-Shaqa, was detained on Sunday and told he was to be expelled for expressing sympathy with Palestinian raiders who killed 34 Israeli bus passengers last year. Soon after his detention other West Bank Mayors from Hebron and Ramahall held a special meeting and warned of a mass resignation. Mayo??? Karim Khallaf spoke to reporters on Sunday (11 November).
