  • Description

WORK ON THE GBP10 MILLION WOOD PULP MILL BEING BUILT BY COURTAULOS LTD., AND THE COLONIAL DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION IN THE USUTU FOREST, SWAZILAND, IS WELL IN HAND AND THERE ARE STRONG HOPES THAT THE MILL WILL BEGIN LIMITED OPERATIONS IN AUGUST. WHEN COMPLETED THE MILL WILL BE ONE OF THE LARGEST IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE.

IN 1949 THE COLONIAL DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION BOUGHT ABOUT 120,000 ACRES OF GRASSLAND ALONG THE GREAT USUTU RIVER, DUST INSIDE THE WESTERN BORDER OF SWAZILAND. WITHIN THREE YEARS 27,5000 ACRES HAD BEEN PLANTED WITH 15 MILLION TREES AND 104 MILES OF NEW ROAD HAD BEEN COMPLETED TO SERVED THE MILL, THE LIVING QUARTERS OF ITS WORKERS AND THE ADMINISTRATIVE BUILDINGS AND WORKSHOPS.

THE PROJECT WAS GROWING - FAST. BY 1958 A TOTAL OF 50 MILLION PINE TREES, WHICH GROW RAPIDLY IN THE FAVOURABLE CLIMATE AND SOFT SOIL, HAD BEEN PLANTED AND MORE THAN 400 MILES OF ACCESS ROADS HAD BEEN BUILT. TO THE GROWING TOWNSHIP WAS ADDED A HYDRO-ELECTRICITY SCHEME, AND AN AIRSTRIP TO BE USED MAINLY BY AIRCRAFT ON SPRAYING OPERATIONS. OVER 80 EUROPEANS AND 1,400 AFRICANS ARE EMPLOYED ON THE FORESTRY SIDE OF THE PROJECT.

COURTALKS HAVE MANY YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN THE PRODUCTION OF CELLULOSE FROM AFRICAN WOODS. CHEMICALS WILL BE OBTAINED FROM THE TRANSVAAL AND WATER FROM THE LOCAL RIVER, WHERE GREAT CARE HAS BEEN TAKEN TO SEE THAT THERE IS NO CONTAMINATION, WILL BE USED.

LOGS WILL BE MOVED TO THE MILL BY ROAD WHERE THEY WILL BE DEBARKED AND CHIPPED INTO SMALL SIZES. AFTER SCREENING TO REMOVE DUST AND OVERSIZE CHIPS, THE CHIPS WILL PASS TO AN 800 TON PER DAY DIGESTING MACHINE FITTED WITH SPECIAL COLD BLOWING EQUIPMENT TO PRESERVE THE STRENGTH OF THE FIBRES. THE SAW PULP WILL ALSO BE SCREENED AND WASHED. PULP DESTINED FOR OVERSEAS WILL BE CONVEYED TO LOURENCO MARQUES IN PORTUGUESE EAST AFRICA, THE NEAREST PORT. ALTHOUGH IT IS EXPECTED THAT SOME OF THE PRODUCTION WILL BE USED IN SOUTH AFRICA, THE MAJORITY IS EXPECTED TO BE SHIPPED TO EUROPE.
