    ALGERIA'S PRIME MINISTER AHMED BEN BELLA PUBLICLY EXPRESSED THE GRATITUDE OF THE ALGERIAN PEOPLE FOR ITS FOOD RELIEF PROGRAMME, WHEN THE UNITED STATES AMBASSADOR, WILLIAM J. PORTER PRESENTED HIS CREDENTIALS AT THE 300 YEAR OLD SUMMER PALACE IN ALGIERS, ON MONDAY.

    MR. BEN BELLA WHO WAS ACCOMPANIED BY HIS FOREIGN AFFAIRS MINISTER, MOHAMMED KEMISTI, TOLD THE AMBASSADOR: "ALGERIA IS CONSCIOUS OF THE AID SENT US BY YOUR COUNTRY ... PLEASE TRANSMIT TO YOUR GOVERNMENT MY OWN THANKS AND THOSE OF THE ALGERIAN PEOPLE." THE U.S. HAS BEEN SENDING UP TO 40,000 TONS OF SURPLUS FOOD A MONTH TO ALGERIA.

    IN REPLY, AMBASSADOR PORTER, SPEAKING BOTH IN FRENCH AND ARABIC, SAID THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HAD BEEN SYMPATHETIC TO ALGERIAN'S STRUGGLE "ACROSS VICISSITUDES OF TIME AND HISTORY."
    TWO OTHER AMBASSADORS PRESENTED THEIR CREDENTIALS THE SAME DAY. FIRST THE NEW SWISS AMBASSADOR, THEN THE BRITISH AMBASSADOR ARRIVED AT THE SUMMER PLACE.

    THE BRITISH AMBASSADOR, MR.TREVOR EVANS POINTED OUT TO THE ALGERIAN PREMIER THAT THE FIRST BRITISH CONSUL TO ALGERIA WAS PRESENT BY QUEEN ELIZABETH I, IN 1580.

    BEN BELLA ASKED MR. EVANS TO CONVEY TO QUEEN ELIZABETH THE FEELINGS OF "ESTEEM AND FRIENDSHIP" THE ALGERIAN PEOPLE FELT FOR HER.
