Background: INTRODUCTION: Ghana and the Ivory Coast have exchanged agreements to improve relations between the two countries. Relations deteriorated after a number of Ghanaians suffocated in a police cell in Abidjan last month. Angry students sacked the Ivory Coast Embassy in Accra in reprisal.

SYNOPSIS: President Houphouet-Boigny, of the Ivory Coast, travelled to Lome, and was met by President Gnassingbe Eyadema. The one-day talks on Saturday were arranged by President Eyadema to settle the dispute between the two countries in the wake of the jail incident. Ghana Embassy officials aids 46 Ghanaians had died, but the Ivory Coast maintained that only 17 victims were Ghanaians.

Ghana's President Hilla Limann also was met by President Eyadema. Ghana had protested to the Ivory Coast government over the cell deaths, which followed the latest in a series of police raids designed to combat a growing crime problem in the Ivory Coast capital.

The statement signed by the leaders said President Houphouet-Boigny "once again regretted the tragic incident that occurred in Abidjan following the negligence of a member of the security forces which left a number of Ghanaians dead". President Limann "also renewed the regrets of his government regarding the action taken by some Ghanian students against the Ivory Coast Embassy in Accra". They agreed to strengthen friendship and co-operation and the Ivory Coast said it would send its diplomatic staff, withdrawn after the attack on the embassy, back to Accra.
