  • Description

The Nigerian leader, General Yakubu Gowon, who is on a state visit to Britain, has paid a sentimental visit to the military establishments where he trained as a young Nigerian army officer. He visited the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst near London, and the staff College at nearby Camberley.

General Gowon is undoubtedly Sandhurst's most distinguished post-war student. At 38 he rules Africa's most populous country. Sandhurst however remembers him as a professional soldier uncritically carrying on the British tradition that politics is none of the Army's business.

Field Marshal Lord Montgomery of Alamein, a British military hero, was the young Gowon's special hero.

On his return visit to the Academy, the General was given full British Military honours. He was escorted by the British Defence Secretary, Lord ???arrington.
