  • Description

Palestine Day - May 15 - was commemorated in Beirut with a rally at the Municiple Palace, presided over by Premier Karami.

Over ten thousand Palestine crowded the stadium. This anniversary is a time of 'mourning' for the Arabs- it marks the abandonment by Britain of her mandate and the creation of Israel. Earlier Israel was dressed overall for the eleventh anniversary of the same event.

Kemal Jumblatt, leader of the Druis Party and a prominent anti-Chamounist during the revolt in Lebanon last year, attended this Beirut rally.

Several days earlier there were scenes in Beirut reminiscent of last year's troubles. One hundred youths struggled in the Riad el Solh Square, using knives and soft-drink bottles as weapon. Police eventually broke up the fight. Two combatants were injured and three arrested. No one seems to know what caused the fight.
