Background: Fifteen hundred scientists from 53 countries attended the opening session of the Fifth International Poliomyelitis Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark, July 26. Honorary President Basil O'Connor of the USA presided.

Probably the best known name at the conference is Dr. Jonas E. Salk of the USA, inventor of the highly controversial vaccine which bears his name. And the main discussion at the Conference is expected to revolve around the respective merits of live vaccine (SOMEONE HAD BETTER CHECK THIS. WHAT DOES IT MEAN?) and dead vaccine.
