    Background: GAZANKULU, SOUTH AFRICA

South African farmers in the Northern Transvaal are facing their worst financial crisis for more than 50 years as a summer-long drought continues. Almost 30,000 cattle are said to have died in the region of Gazankulu and there has been 10 million dollars damage to the district farmland. The dusty, parched landscape is now littered with the decomposing carcasses of a cattle. Although scattered showers fell in some isolated areas on January 16, the rain was insufficient to break the drought. Emergency relief measures have now been introduced by the government and the region has already purchased 200,000 tonnes of fodder in a bid to keep the remaining cattle alive. Many farmers are also drilling for borewater on their land but many more cattle are expected to die of good rains do not fall shortly.
