  • Description

IN SOUTH VIETNAM, AUSTRALIAN TROOPS HAVE LAUNCHED OPERATION LYREBIRD - THEIR SECOND LAND CLEARING OPERATION THIS YEAR - AIMED AT REDUCING THE JUNGLE AREA WHERE THE VIET CONG CAN HIDE, SET UP BASE CAMPS AND TRAINING CENTRES. THE SCENE IS NUI DAT, NEAR THE AUSTRALIAN TASK FORCE HEADQUARTERS, ABOUT 45 MILES SOUTH-WEST OF SAIGON.

THE AUSTRALIAN ARMY IS USING BULLDOZERS AND TRACTORS AS ITS LATEST WEAPONS AGAINST THE VIET CONG. THESE CLEAR THE JUNGLE AND ENABLE HELICOPTERS TO LAND IN THE CLEARINGS AND VEHICLES TO MOVE QUICKLY TO SUSPECTED VIET CONG POSITIONS.

THEY AIM TO CLEAR SIXTEEN MILES OF TRAILS, TWO HUNDRED YARDS WIDE, SEPARATING TWO RANGES OF HILLS WHICH PROVIDE MANY HIDDEN BASES FOR THE VIET CONG.

OPERATION LYREBIRD IS UNDER THE COMMAND OF BRIGADIER RON HUGHES OF BRISBANE.

AUSTRALIAN ARMOURED PERSONNEL CARRIERS AND FOUR PLATOONS OF NEW ZEALAND INFANTRYMEN PROTECT THE ARMY ENGINEERS AS THEY PUSH THEIR WAY THROUGH THE DENSE JUNGLE.

IN APRIL, THE JUNGLE WAS CUT OF AROUND THE LONG HAI HILLS, NEAR SAIGON, AFTER THE AREA HAD BEEN CLEARED. THE ARMY SAYS THE PLAN SEEMS TO HAVE WORKED AS ITS FOUND NO RECENT SIGNS OF ENEMY ACTIVITY.
