  • Description

An Asian symposium on labour and population policies has opened in Kuala Lumpur under the sponsorship of the International Labour Organisation and the Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East. Delegates from 13 countries attended. The Chinese, though invited, did not turn up.

The main purpose of the 10-day symposium is to consider means of controlling population expansion before it undermines economic growth. Various types of birth control campaigns will be discussed and evaluated.

At the opening session, the Malaysian Prime Minister, Tun abdul Razak, warned delegates that unless the population explosion throughout Asia was swiftly checked all economic achievements would be worthless. The issue could no longer be avoided, no matter how unpalatable it might be in some countries.
