    Left wing demonstrators against the visit to Bonn on Tuesday (April 10) by South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu occupied the city hall and sealed it off.

    Police doused them with water cannon and prepared to storm the hall, which was festooned with Viet Cong and North Vietnamese flags and banners.

    An estimated 1,000 demonstrators closed ranks around the hall while others threw leaflets out of windows denouncing Thieu's visit.

    It was reported that the demonstration had been staged by members of the West German Communist Party who wanted the South Vietnamese President 's visit called off.

    Police and demonstrator clashed and several arrests were made. Trouble had flared the previous day (April 9) when resident Thieu was in Rome for an audience with the Pope. Demonstrators had gathered in St. Peter's Square. Police said a petrol bomb had been thrown.

    SYNOPSIS: The crowd attempted to repel the police with a barrage of missiles from upper windows.

    Eventually water cannon were brought in and the police were able to get to close quarters with the demonstrators. It was reported that the protest had been organised and staged by the West German Communist Party who wanted the South Vietnamese President's visit called off. There had been similar stormy scenes in Rome the previous day when President Thieu went for an audience with the Pope. Several arrests were made in Bonn and there were a number of casualties who were taken to hospital following the clash with the police.
