  • Description

Russian soldiers killed in two world wars were honoured on Red Army Day, Feb 23, as officers, politicians and workers placed wreaths at a memorial in the Soviet military cemetery at Treptow, East Berlin.

The ceremony was attended by the Soviet Ambassador in East Berlin, Pervukhin, and members of the East German regime, including party leader Herr Walter Ulbricht and the Speaker of the East German Parliament, Herr Dickmann. Leading Russian military representative was General Silnikov, Deputy C-in-C of the Soviet Army in East Germany.

Wreaths were also laid at the Russian war memorial near the Brandenburg Gate. East German soldiers formed a guard of honour at this monument incongruously placed in the British sector of Berlin.
