  • Description

An interesting new cross-country amphibious vehicle, made by the West German Messerschmitt-Bolknow-Blohm company of Munich, made a disastrous first showing to the press at Feldkirchen near Munich on Thursday.

The vehicle, made with an all-fibre-glass body and four-wheel drive, looks like fulfilling a lot of the promises made for it, but at the press-show it sank in a pond while demonstrating its 'amphibious' qualities.

The makers had selected a pond with too steep a bank, and the vehicle could not really be expected to negotiate it. It was an embarrassing setback for German technology.

The car should do better in future. It is easily assembled from two sections of fibre-glass. The shell itself is buoyant in the water, and its light weight gives it a lively performance of 56-62 m.p.h. (90-100 kph) with six or seven people aboard, plus their equipment. Messerchmitt-Bolknow-Blohm developed the new vehicle for civil or military use in conjunction with the Federal Office of Military Technology and Procurement, and the Federal Ministry of Defence.
